In the middle of the island there is a particularly old and large baobab tree. If you make it to the top you can see the point where the four countries of Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Namibia meet. Climb the lookout baobab and sit high above the Zambezi flood plain and behold an endless view over all four countries. This baobab has an astounding girth of 48 meters.
Impalila Island Tour
Impalila Island is about 12 kilometers long and 6 kilometers wide. The Island lies in the middle of the Zambezi River. It is dotted with small villages and is a good place to see a variety of game and birdlife.
Impalila is an island at the far eastern tip of Namibia. Is is bounded on the north by the waters of the Zambezi river and on the south by the Chobe River. It is home to some 2500-3000 people in 25 small villages,including Tswanas (from Botswana) and Subia people (from Namibia).
Impalila Island is usually accessed from Kasane in Botswana. There is a Namibian customs and immigration post on the island. There is also an airport with a 1,300 meter runway. The airport is used for charter flights to bring tourists to the various lodges on the island. The airport is a relic of a military base used in the 1980s by the South African Defense Forces. It is strategically positioned within sight of Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
